ROV Basic Driver Course

Part 1 - E-Course

(This course is completed prior to the Basic Driver Course)

The ROV E-Course is a multi-media, interactive online safety course. It reinforces:

  • Key risk factors associated with ROV operation
  • Safe driving practices that will reduce the risk of injury
  • The best resources for learning about your particular vehicle

This two-hour safety course is not a "learn to drive" course. It is intended to improve awareness about ROVs and inspire a safety-minded approach to off-road recreation.

Part 2 - Basic Driver Course

The ROV Basic Driver Course (RBDC) is designed for current and prospective recreational off-highway vehicle users and is conducted by ROV Driver Coaches who are specially trained and authorized, to conduct the course. The RBDC is a half-day program that includes six closed range exercises:

  • Vehicle familiarity including pre trip inspections
  • Vehicle control operation to include proper start up and shut down
  • Straight line operation
  • Braking, both normal and quick stops
  • Turning, backing and obstacle crossing
  • Swerving and object avoidance

The overall aim of the RBDC is to provide for driver development in the areas of skill and risk management strategies. This includes learning experiences to foster gains in basic knowledge, skill, attitude, values, and habits.

Open Trail Experience

The optional Open Trail Experience allows drivers to apply the techniques learned on “real-world” terrain. Depending on the terrain that is available, it may include:

  • Rocky, sandy, and muddy terrain
  • Tight trails and wooded areas
  • Negotiate obstacles such as hills, water and rocks

Course Requirements

We have a training facility in the greater Fredericton area or

The Instructor can come to you. The organization requesting the training must provide:

  • An area the size of a football field minimum. This could be a field, open area in a gravel pit, or large non paved parking lot for the closed course portion
  • Legal access to local trails or a large gravel pit for the optional Open Trail Experience.
  • 1 licensed and insured ROV for every 2 students. ROVs are available for rent but must be booked in advance. The instructor will transport to the course location
  • 6 students per serial with 2 serials per day is optimal (most cost effective for the organization taking the training)

Student Requirements

In addition to being over the age of 16 and not having a suspended driver’s license; each student is to have:

  • DOT compliant helmet
  • Protective eyewear
  • Long sleeve shirt/jacket
  • Long pants
  • Gloves
  • Over the ankle footwear

Cost

The cost of the course is dependent on the number of students, location and rental requirements.
